Where California Wine Began

Sonoma Valley is the OG—California's first wine region. In 1857, Hungarian Count Agoston Haraszthy founded Buena Vista Winery here, planting the first European vines and establishing what would become a California industry. History runs deep in these hills.

The valley stretches 17 miles from San Pablo Bay to the Mayacamas Mountains, with the historic Sonoma Plaza at its heart. Unlike Russian River's fog or Dry Creek's heat, Sonoma Valley has it all—diverse microclimates mean diverse wines. Pinot in the south, Cabernet in the north, everything in between.

Jack London called it the "Valley of the Moon" after the Wappo Native American name "Sonoma" (meaning "valley of many moons"). Whether you're into history, hiking, or just damn good wine, this valley delivers.

Sonoma Valley vineyards with mountain backdrop

Many Moons, Many Wines

Diverse terrain, diverse grapes—from sea level to mountain peaks

Carneros (South)

Cool, foggy, close to the bay. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay thrive here. Think elegant, restrained, Burgundian-style wines. Also sparkling wine heaven.

Sonoma Valley (Center)

Balanced climate, volcanic soils. Everything grows well—Zinfandel, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Franc. This is where winemakers experiment.

Sonoma Mountain (North)

High elevation, volcanic slopes. Bold Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux blends. Above the fog line, these wines have power and structure.

Historic Sonoma Plaza town square

Sonoma Plaza

The 8-acre plaza is the largest town square in California and the heart of Sonoma. Founded in 1835 during Mexican rule, it's surrounded by historic adobe buildings, wine tasting rooms, restaurants, and shops.

  • Sonoma Mission: 1823 Spanish colonial mission, last in California
  • Sonoma Barracks: Where the Bear Flag was raised in 1846
  • Tasting Rooms: 30+ wineries have downtown tasting rooms
  • Restaurants: The Girl & The Fig, El Dorado Kitchen, Cafe La Haye

Jack London's Ranch

Author Jack London fell in love with Sonoma Valley and bought his "Beauty Ranch" in Glen Ellen. Today it's a state park with hiking trails, historic buildings, and stunning vineyard views. A perfect pre- or post-wine activity.

  • Wolf House Ruins: Jack London's dream home that burned down
  • Hiking Trails: 29 miles of trails through redwoods and vineyards
  • Museum: Author's life and writing studio
